Abstract
In determining carbon in high-sulphur iron and steel (sulphur content 0.1 to 30 per cent) by the direct combustion-gasometric method large amount of oxides of sulphur are formed and positive errors are caused if they are not removed. The absorbents commonly used for this purpose, as well as a promising new one, have been tested. Ironized asbestos and copper oxide packed in the combustiop tube were not effective, as the oxides of sulphur formed was too much in quantity in this case.Good results were obtained when the exit gases from the combustion tube weie paesed through an absorption tube containing abont 10cc of 5% KMnO4, 50% OrO3 or 30% H2O2. The Iast is a new one, and proved to be most satisfactory, because it has five or six times as great an oxidizing capacity as the former.
