Abstract
The Joint Authorities for Rulemaking of Unmanned Systems (JARUS), a group of aviation authorities from the United States, Europe, Japan, and other countries, has published SORA (Specific Operation Risk Assessment) in 2017, with the aim of providing a communication tool for operators of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and regulators. SORA is to facilitate them to confirm that risks are controlled to an acceptable level of society. We applied SORA to an already permitted UAS delivery demonstration at BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Site) approach in Japan in order to deepen the understanding of the SORA and to obtain useful suggestions. SORA highlighted risks that need to be mitigated from the demonstration phase to the full-scale social implementation of UAS, and also necessary improvements for the operational environment in Japan.
