Corn plant population and LAI in relation to grain production were studied on four different soils in 1967. The results are as follows. 1. The logarithm of grain yields per plant decreased linearly as plant population was increased. By using the linear relationships, the optimum plant populations to maximize grain yields on the four different soils were calculated. The optimum plant populations became larger in the order, on the soils of Ishidoriya, Toshima, Matsukawa and Kuriyagawa. 2. The logarithm of grain yields per LAI decreased linearly as LAI was increased. By using the linear relationships, the optimum LAI to maximize grain yields on the four different soils were calculated. The optimum LAI became larger in the order, on the soils of Ishidoriya, Matsukawa, Toshima and Kuriyagawa. 3. The evidence above mentioned suggested that the optimum plant population and LAI increased generally as increasing soil fertility.
