Abstract

The aim of this study was to elucidate support for the growth and development from a proficient nurse to a mid-level nurse that is required by nurses in pediatric wards. Focused group interviews were conducted with three mid-level nurses and three proficient nurses in a pediatric ward. Details on support provided for the growth and development from a proficient nurse to a mid-level nurse comprised six categories identified in data from mid-level nurses and five from proficient nurses. In addition to the basic characteristics of pediatric nurses that were in common to both groups, there was also a need for the types of support for growth. Basic characteristics included specialized knowledge unique to pediatric nursing and support for growth and development in the practical application of skills and techniques, support to help a mother feel as if her feelings are understood by her child, and support that facilitates the building of a relationship between mother and infant. Types of support for growth included support through messages of approval and role-modeling the caregiving experience, and career growth support. The results suggested that factors identified in this study were required to create a support system designed to assist in the growth and development from a proficient nurse to a mid-level nurse in pediatric wards.
