To assess the removal capability of toxic substances from the water environment, Ni-Al or Mg-Fe complex hydroxide at different molar ratios was prepared in this study. The physicochemical characteristics such as XRD patterns, specific surface area, and surface functional groups were investigated and the interaction between amount of toxic substances removed and characteristics of metal complex hydroxide was also evaluated. Ni-Al or Mg-Fe complex hydroxide was useful for removal of toxic substances such as chromium(VI) ion and inorganic nitrogen from the aqueous phase. Our results elucidated the adsorption mechanism by the elemental distribution and binding energy analyses.
