Abstract

Histone modifications such as acetylation and methylation are known as one of the epigenetic mechanisms. They are also involved in several disease states such as cancer and neurological disorders. Especially, histone demethylases are important enzymes in redox biology because they oxidatively demethylate methylated histones using oxygen molecules (1, 2).

In addition, it has recently been suggested that chemical substances in foods and environments covalently bind to histones, which could affect human health (3).

In this context, we have been trying to identify small molecules that control histone modifications. To date, we have identified lysine specific-demethylase 1 inhibitors with anticancer activity (4), S-adenosylmethionine inhibitors (5), and lysine demethylase 5C inhibitors with antidepressant activity (6). In this workshop, some of our works on histone modification modulators will be presented.
