Toyota National College of Technology introduced an Extensive Reading(ER) and Extensive Listening(EL) Course into the English Curriculum in 2008. This paper is the first report on our implementation of the ER/EL course for the first year students. It describes the process of setting up the course and the details of the lesson procedures. The paper also reports the observed effects of the course on the students and the results of the questionnaires administered at the end of the academic year. They have shown that in-class SSR(Sustained Silent Reading), along with a great number and variety of easy reading materials, is indispensable for a successdul extensive reading program.
