Considering an application of oscillating heat pipes (OHPs) for thermal management in space satellites, heat transport characteristics of OHP in which a wick is inserted, are investigated experimentally. The OHP inserting wick(s) works well at a range of higher input power suppressing dryout at the heating section. But at a middle heat input range, the wicked OHP's effective thermal conductivity becomes lower than that of the wick-less OHP. However, by inserting two wicks asymmetrically, the wicked OHP shows high heat transfer performance in a relatively wide heat input range. By forming a circulating flow, clear temperature differences of the adiabatic part in odd and even pipes are shown. A wick of about half the distance between the heating and cooling sections of OHP shows high performance. If the wick length is too long, the flow resistance increases. If it is too short, the reflux effect to the heating section decreases. Regarding the expansion of the heat transport distance by inserting wick(s), it is expected that the region of heat transport accompanying the phase change phenomenon near the heating section is important for the mechanism of the heat transport phenomenon of OHP.
