There exists a wide variety of the so-called shear pumps that are designed for various applications in the wide fields of foods, medicines, chemicals and so on. However, as the detail about the pump performance characteristics is not obtained, the shear pumps are often designed based on many yearsx experience. In this study, to obtain the performance characteristics, we measured the total head, pump efficiency, shaft power with respect to the discharge, the net positive suction head and the fluid viscosity in the range of 1-1000 cP. The performance characteristics of the shear pump is very similar to that of the centrifugal pump, except for the very low efficiency. The pump performance reduces with increasing fluid viscosity.
