Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to interpret the media texts which handled “Ijiri” from the viewpoint of Erving Goffman's multilayer reality. “Ijiri” attracts people's attention in relation to bullying in the fields of youth culture sociology and communication theory recently. It requires consideration from our definition process of relation between bullying and “Ijiri”. This paper interprets Shii Kodo's novel Ijiri is a hundred times as scary as bullying (2005) and TV play A 35-year-old high school student (2013). The former describes changing process of definition of relation from “Ijiri” to bullying in girl's group. The latter describes cruel “Ijiri” battles in boy's group. Since “Ijiri” seems the joke by appearances, it is difficult to notice the pain of victims for interaction participants. This paper demonstrates categorical relation between bullying and “Ijiri” from the viewpoint of Goffman's multilayer reality.
