This paper describes our study for a cost-effective MPEG decoder system. We simulated and evaluated an MPEG decoder system where frame memory is reduced with a technique of 1D-DPCM, 4bit non-linear quantizer. The results articulate that, with approximately half size memory capacity, degradation caused by this compression is 0.2〜0.7dB (SNR) for MPEG standard test sequences, and the degradation is hardly recognized perceptively.
