Abstract

In Buber’s thought, an “artist” makes a work in relationship with “Du” which has encounters and dialogues with human beings. The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of a teacher and qualities of an art teacher as a teacher, by confirming the significance of the two relationships of “Ich-Du” and “Ich-Es” that become dual by making an art work. In previous studies, Buber’s thought about education has been read with a focus on dialogues between teachers and children, but this paper will put focus on a teacher educating children, knowing there is also relationship “Ich-Es” which does not mean any dialogue, in order to consider two claims by Buber: the purpose of education to “help children become human beings who have a relationship with the world” and the educational acts which must be done “as if one were not doing it”. A teacher educates children to let them have relationship “Ich-Du”, acknowledging there are two types of the relationships that human beings have with the world. An art teacher has the qualities to teach children to be the participants of the two relationships, being an “artist” who experiences duality of the relationships.
