In the new government course guidelines, along with students’ active learning, cooperating with the region and society is highly regarded. Even among art education in junior high school, with regards to the field of design, a learning theme of students themselves deriving plans to solve problems from their involvement in society is deemed necessary. In this study, taking into account the method of connection from the region to society and the method of activities of autonomous problem-solving among the ways of thinking about social design in which people of the region aim to solve social problems themselves, we came up with a theme and conducted an educational practice. In the educational practice, we conducted a lesson on pictograms relating to communication among students and activities striving for relevance outside of class related to sustainability. From the educational practice, we showed an example of focusing on students’ lifestyles and forming a connection with the student council, which is an autonomous activity, being effective with regards to a theme of problem solving in school. Also, the necessity of responding to the extent of the location used with the theme and striving for a connection outside of class were pointed out.
