Abstract

This paper discusses issues of connection for preschools and elementary schools in terms of handicraft play. Handcraft play is a general term for both education for young children and education in elementary schools. However, the meaning and content indicated are different therefore we can consider it is an important term when we review the connection between handicraft education for young children and drawing and crafts education in elementary schools. As an initial stage of the basic research, this paper examined descriptions of notification related to education for young children and “explanation of the course of study for drawing and crafts education in elementary schools” to explore where the issue of connection and collaboration between preschools and elementary schools exist. As a result, we found issues that 1) It is difficult for persons related to education in elementary schools to confirm the actual situation of handcraft play in education for young children 2) We still need to re-examine the unique effect by “handcraft play” in elementary school education and the relevancy with other educational activities 3) Analytical or concrete perspectives are insufficient while the comprehensive connection between preschools and elementary schools are considered by the living environment studies.
