This work forms part of the continuous study to analyze the concept of “play” in art education. Here, “expansion of art” which constitutes one aspect of the concept of “play” in art education is examined, mainly featuring two key subjects: (1) contents of the activities of a study group having the viewpoint of “expansion of the concept of art” on art education and (2) expansion within the comprehensive environment for learning, including so-called integrated study, ESD, STEAM and interdisciplinary learning. The practice of “invitation to flexible thought resulting from the expanding concept of art” has been sustained by teachers who are interested in contemporary art, teachers who hope to make children experience the meaning of art beyond the act of making art works and teachers who find it significant to teach art while combining art with project type activities and integrated study. While some positive results have been achieved, there is still a pending task of merging the said invitation with “intrinsic motivation generating independent action” which is another aspect of the concept of “play”. This is because there are instances where these two aspects are separated from each other.
