Abstract
English phrasal verb put back means that an agent places an object to the place where it was before and put ahead means that an agent places an object to the place in front of something. These phrasal verbs extend their meanings to “delay/advance” in the same way as ushiro/mae daoshi do in the Japanese language. Our goal here is to clarify the process of the semantic extension which put back undergoes in contrast with put ahead with reference to “time” which is supposed to be moving from the past to the future.
