Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the effort for neighborhood safety in Kume Area, Matsuyama City which aimed mainly to give the new students of the elementary school the information concerning neighborhood safety and analyze the attitude of their parents toward the “welcome map” as a fruit of the effort.
The process is (1) children and residents made “neighborhood safety maps” through the investigation of their neighborhood,(2) adults had a discussion on the solution to the problems concerning neighborhood safety and (3) they gave the newcomers the “welcome map” as a fruit of their effort.
The effort and the map were highly regarded because of the clarity of the map and its usefulness to share the information among residents and most of the parents had the wish for having this sort of the map continuously. Their wish is explained by two factors; their evaluation of the effort as a process of community building and their anxiety about their children's safety.
