Abstract

This study aimed to conduct an assessment and analysis of an urban energy system, specifically of the sustainability and resilience aspects of the system. Two cities were considered for comparative purposes: Jambi, Indonesia and Kyoto, Japan. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was used for the assessment, in which environmental and socio-economic sustainability dimensions linked by institutional dimension were considered, as well as resilience, represented by the technical dimension. Criteria and sub-criteria weights were established through a questionnaire survey of 35 respondents consisting of academics, electric power company employees, and local government officials. The results suggest that each city outweighed the other in some specific sub-criteria or sub sub-criteria. To improve the sustainability and resilience of the energy system in Jambi, efforts such as setting a specified and achievable target of renewable energy adoption, incorporating renewable energy utilization into the municipal infrastructure, commercial buildings, and facilities, and investing and collaborating in renewable energy projects will be required.
