Abstract
General anaesthesia is beneficial in that the animals can receive veterinary care safely and painlessly. However, the safety of the use of anaesthetics cannot always be ensured because of its sedating effect on the central nervous system. Among them, the surgical position, a non- physiological position, increases the risk of developing pressure ulcers when retained for a long time. Therefore, in humans, the prevention of pressure ulcers during surgery under general anaesthesia is considered one of the most important issues in operative care of patients. However, no report has been published on body pressures during surgical position in dogs under general anaesthesia. In this study, the body pressures in beagles under general anaesthesia were compared surgical positions. High body pressures were observed in the head, scapular, and iliac regions. We speculated that the beagle dogs under general anaesthesia in the supine position had a risk of developing pressure ulcers during surgery.
