Antimicrobial effect of fatty acid to Staphylococcus sp and Malassezia sp isolated from pyoderma and otitis externa in dogs.

Abstract
This study demonstrated the antibacterial effect of selected fatty acids on bacteria and yeast that were isolated from pyoderma and external otitis in dogs. Microorganisms used in this study were isolated from dogs that were diagnosed as pyoderma and otitis externa. Caprylic acid(C8:0), capric acid (C10:0), lauric acid(C12:0), myristic acid(C14:0), palmitic acid(C16:0), stearic acid(C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1)and linoleic acid(C18:2)were used as potential treatment of pyoderma and external otitis. These fatty acids were emulsified with monoglyceryloleate. Fatty acid emulsion was diluted by saline. Test bacteria and yeast were inoculated to mannitol salt ager medium and sabouraud ager medium, respectively, and cultivated for 24hr at 37°C. The growth of bacteria and yeast was observed after 24hr incubation, and minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC)of each fatty acid was determined. MICs of each fatty acid against the bacteria isolated from pyoderma were as follows: 0.16% in C 8 :0, 0.32% in C10:0, 0.16% in C12: 0 and 0.32% in C18:2. No effect was observed in C14:0, C16:0, C18: 0 and C18:1. MICs of the fatty acids for the yeast isolated from external otitis were as follows; 0.005% in C 8 :0, 0.01% in C10:0, 0.04% in C12:0, 0.08% in C14: 0 and 0.01% in C18:2. No effect was observed in C16:0, C18: 0 and C18: 1 at the concentration of 0.32%. This result showed that selected fatty acids may exhibit as new safety drugs that were effective for pyoderma and external otitis.
