Turbulent flows exhibit multiscale structures and coherent motions that generate organized patterns, distinguishing them from artificial fractal noise. Their visualizations may thus provide a link between fractal noise and natural images. In this study, we measured event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by viewing grayscale images illustrating velocity or concentration fields of two-dimensional homogeneous turbulence. Separate oddball tasks were conducted for each image category (velocity field, concentration field, and artificial noise). P300 amplitude was quantified as the area difference between target and standard responses. The results showed significantly larger amplification for concentration-field images than for noise images. This implies that turbulence concentration-field images may induce cognitive processing distinct from noise images, potentially reflecting daily experiences in which turbulent spatial patterns are recognized through concentration-based cues such as smoke or dye. As an exploratory preliminary study, the present findings are expected to encourage the development of diverse visual experiments utilizing turbulent phenomena.
