STUDIES ON THE BACTERIAL SYNTHESIS AND DESTRUCTION OF THIAMINE : (III) DESTRUCTION AND PHOSPHORYLATION WITH CELL FREE PREPARATION OBTAINED FROM ESCHERICHIA COLI

Abstract

It was found that thiamine was phosphorylated with cell free extract of Escherichia coli. The recovery of total thiamine added was slightly decreased but the existence of thiaminase could not be confirmed in it. On the other hand, thiaminase activity was found in the precipitate fraction with 0.6 saturation of ammonium sulfate of cell free extract of Staphylococcus.
