Abstract
Bacillus B5 is a non-motile, Gram-positive, catalase-negative rod. Optimum temperature for growth is 30℃, optimum pH is 5.0-6.0,minimum pH is 8.6,but can grow at above pH 7.8. It resists to hop antiseptic, its growth is promoted by CO_2. All ten strains require essentially uracil and purines, but not require mevalonic acid and peptides. All of the strains ferment arabinose, xylose, glucose, galactose, maltose and sucrose, but can not ferment fructose, and fermentability of glucose is considerably inferior to that of maltose. Bacillus B5 seems to ferment sugars through the enzyme system involving mevalonic acid-like substance, and to ferment maltose through pathway of phosphorilysis from the view point of fermentability of sugars. It is proposed that Bacillus B5 is a new variety of Lactobacillus pastorianus. Heterofermentative "Hiochi-Lactobacilli" donnot require uracil and purines, therefore, it is concluded that they are the different species on the origin.
