Abstract
Various video systems have been developed for the purpose of the stronger sense of presence, but the quantitative evaluation of the sense is very difficult. Subject evaluations and physiological responses have been used to evaluate it. This study aims to establish a clear quantitative relation between the viewing angle of the displayed images and the viewer's sense while watching still images with 6 variations of visual angle, which correspond to video systems ranging in resolution from high-definition (horizontal visual angle is approximately 30arcdeg.) to 4000-scanning-line Super Hi-Vision (100arcdeg.). The experimental apparatus was Super Hi-Vision system. We assessed the sense by subjective evaluations, and measured viewers' body sway, which is the response of a human equilibrium system, as an index of the sense. The results showed the quantitative relations between the evaluations and the viewing angle.
