NSSI is a significant risk factor for suicide among adolescents and young adults, referring to intentional, direct injury to body tissue without suicidal intent. Research suggests NSSI serves an emotion regulation function, necessitating its understanding within comprehensive frameworks. The stage model of emotion regulation outlines four steps: Identification, Selection, Implementation, and Monitoring. NSSI implementation is presumed to involve recognition and evaluation in the identification and selection stages, yet research on this process remains limited.

This study examined the emotion regulation process underlying NSSI by comparing individuals with and without NSSI experience. A survey of 207 university students (91 males, 115 females, 1 other, M=20.05, SD=1.77) used validated psychological measures. Analysis supported the hypothesized model, linking difficulties in identification and selection to NSSI feasibility. Both groups showed associations between difficulties in recognizing emotions, perceiving them as uncontrollable, and identifying regulation strategies. Among NSSI-experienced individuals, difficulties in emotion recognition were linked to positive evaluations of NSSI, which, along with strategy recognition difficulties, predicted greater NSSI feasibility.

While causality cannot be inferred from this cross-sectional study, findings support the stage model’s applicability to NSSI. Understanding NSSI within this framework may aid targeted interventions for emotion regulation difficulties.
