For TMCP high tensile steel plates with yield point of 40kgf/mm^2 which were recently developed and manufactured for practical use for ship hulls, the authors tentatively studied mechanical properties that would be required of them for actual ship applications and evaluated experimentally fracture toughness, fatigue strength, etc. of base metal as well as of welded joints produced in them by high heat-input welding processes, with the following results. (1) The newly developed 40kgf/mm^2-yield point TMCP high tensile steel plates are excellent as regards the strength and fracture toughness of both base metal and welded joints. (2) The newly developed TMCP high tensile steel plates are capable of effectively serving as crack propagation arrest materials when used in ship hulls. (3) No special engineering considerations other than those given the ordinary high tensile ship steels are needed for the required level of fatigue strength in the use of the 40kgf/mm^2-yield point TMCP high tensile steel plates.
