The effect of oar elasticity on the propulsion of a shell eight boat is investigated. The speed and the rowing motion are analyzed by image processing techniques to provide the motion of oars and crew. In order to make clear the effect of oar elasticity, the dynamical motion of the boat and oars is numerically simulated assuming the motion of oarsmen. The hydrodynamic force acting on the blade is estimated by using the experimental data. Due to the bending effect, the velocity at blade tip with the normal elasticity is smaller than that of rigid oar at catch or finish rowing. So that the thrusting force becomes smaller as decreasing the rigidity of oar.
