This paper, discusses the optimum structural modification method in dynamic optimization problems, through simple numerical examples. Generally we need a great amount of calculation and time on problems of modified dynamic characteristics of large and complicated structures. It is because there should be more modifying parameters (design variables) than the dynamic characteristics (objective function) to be done. Here this paper shows the optimum structural modification method with sensitivity analysis and quasi-least squares method and considers how much it will be valid. Design sensitivity analysis plays a central role in structural optimization, since virtually all optimization methods require computaion of derivatives of dynamic characteristics with respect to design variables. In this paper, design sensitivity analysis by energy method is presented, which decreases computational time.
