Selection of treatment by using MMPI in patients with low back pain

Abstract
MMPI was used in selection of treatment in 83 patients with low back pain. There were 34 patients with only low back pain and 49 patients with low back pain and symptoms of lower extremities. Patients with objective findings were treated by surgery.
In patients with only low back pain: Four patients with MMPI findings were treated by surgery, the treatment of all patients was successful. Six patients with no MMPI findings were treated by surgery, the treatment of all patients was successful. Sixteen patients treated by conservative treatment with MMPI fendings, the treatment of only 7 patients was successful, 9 patients was unsuccessful. Eight patients treated by conservative treatment with no MMPI findings, the treatment of all patients was successful.
In patients with low back pain and symptoms of lower extremities : Fourteen patients treated by surgery with MMPI findings, the treatment of 12 patients was successful, 2 patients was unsuccessful. Eleven patients treated by surgery with no MMPI findings, the treatment of 8 patients was successful, 3 patients was unsuccessful. Seventeen patients treated by conservative treatment with MMPI findings, the treatment of only 8 patients was successful, 9 patients was unsuccessful. Seven patients treated by conservative treatment with noMMPI findings, the treatment of 5 patients was successful, 2 patients was unsuccessful. Patients with objective findings should be treated by surgery regardless of MMPI findings, the treatment would be successful. Patients with no objective findings were treated by conservative treatment, the treatment of most of the patients with MMPI findings was unsuccessful, these patients shoud be treated by psychotherapy.
