Glutaric acid was obtained in a good yield from cyclopentane through oxidation with NO2. At 65°C, 65% of the NO2 used was found to be consumed in 3 hrs., and the yield of the dibasic acid reached 91% on a basis of consumed NO2. As the reaction temperature was raised, the consumption of NO2 was accelerated, though the yield of glutaric acid dropped. The effects of the ratio NO2/cyclopentane upon conversion and yield were less evident than that of temperature. The main by-product from this reaction was mononitrocyclopentane. The reaction rate of NO2 was expressed by the equation :log k=1.08×1012e 21170/RTwhere, k represented reaction rate constant [mol 1-1 hr-1];T represented absolute reaction temperature [°K].
