Abstract
Phenol was reacted with 1-chloro-2-methylbutene-3 (prenyl chloride) using phosphoric acid as a catalyst.
By means of gas-liquid chromatography, IR and NMR spectroscopy, the following products were identified ; 2, 2-dimethyl chroman, 2, 2-dimethy1-8- (3-methy1-3butenyl) chroman, 2, 2-dimethy1-8- (3-methy1-2-butenyl) chroman, 2, 2-dimethy1-6 (3-methy1-3-butenyl) chroman, 2, 2-dimethyl-6- (3-methyl-2-butenyl) chroman, 4 (3-methy1-3-butenyl) phenol, and 4- (3-methyl-2-butenyl) phenol.
The effects of the reactant ratios on the product compositions were clarified, and those reactions were compared with that between phenol and isoprene.
