Abstract
Methods for the analysis of the hydroxyl groups in α, ω-dihydroxyl polystyrene were investigated. The acetylation method, the lithium aluminum hydride method, and the three isocyanate methods were modified to analyze the sample of less than 1 gram. The adaptability of these methods was ascertained by the use of α, ω-dihydroxyl polystyrene and stearyl alcohol-monodispersed polystyrene mixtures. Diglyme was found to be a good solvent for the lithium aluminum hydride method. Somewhat higher molecular weights were obtained from the isocyanate methods which must use reprecipitation in their analytical procedures, whereas somewhat lower molecular weights were obtained from other methods because of impurities.
