This review, including two parts, deals with recent progress in the total synthesis of natural products. The first is concerned mainly with synthetic strategies for building up the frameworks of natural products. The second part places emphasis on the synthesis of macrolides, in which acyclic compounds with many asymmetric centers have been synthesized with elegant stereocontrol.
