The insertion of carbon or nitrogen atom into the 8a-9 bond of fluorene skeleton affords phenanthrene or phenanthridine derivatives. The ring enlargement of the 6-membered ring of fluorenes has been reported scarcely. The transformation of fluorene nuclei is reviewed.
