This article is concerned with the syntheses of polyamides and their analogs by the ring-opening polyaddition reactions of diamines with bifunctional heterocyclic compounds containing acyl groups, as an extension of the nucleophilic acyl substitution of activated carboxylic acid derivatives to polymer syntheses. After a brief introduction of the reactivity of heterocyclic compounds, aminolysis and ring-opening polyaddition reactions of five-membered lactones, five-membered cyclic imide derivatives, and four-membered heterocyclic compounds are presented. New types of polymerizations through ring-opening addition are also described.
