The chemistry of taxane diterpenoids has a long history since about 1850. Recent advances in this field brought about the discovery of taxol and its derivatives (e.g., taxotére) which are under the development as a new antitumor agent. This review describes the novel chemistry of the taxane diterpenoids including the historical matters in the initial period of researches. The present status in the chemical and biological studies of taxol is mentioned as one of highlights.
