The effect of the ζ-potential on the subcritical crack growth in soda-lime glass in aqueous solutions was experimentally investigated. The stress intensity factor KI at the crack tip and the crack propagation velocity V were measured using the double torsion method. ζ-potential in the aqueous solution was controlled by the concentration of aluminium nitrate solutions. We observed that the crack propagation velocity showed a slight increase when ζ≈0. Our experimental result is consistent with ζ-potential dependence of fracture strength of rocks, found by ISHIDO and MIZUTANI (1978).
