In the years of1995andl996, a total of6, 802ticks were collected by flagging on vegetation at50sites in the mainland of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. These were identified as three genera and10species as follows: Amblyomma testudinarium, Haemaphysalis flava, H. formosensis, H. hystricis, H. kitaokai, H. longicornis, H. megaspinosa, Ixodes nipponensis, I. ovatus and I. turdus. The most abundant and widely distributed species was H. flava, followed by H longicornis and H. formosensis. In isolaton of rickettsiae by using cultured L-929cell, three nymphal A. testudinarium were positive for spotted fever group rickettsiae of the AT-1serotype(near Rickettsia massiliae), and seven adult I. ovatus were found positive for the same group rickettsiae of theIO-1 serotype(Rickettsia helvetica-like), and trypanosome-like protozoa was detected in one nymphal A. testudinarium.
