Understanding the changes that occur with age in physical fitness and athletic ability is essential for the safe continuation of competitive sports. The purpose of this study was to investigate age-related changes in the sprint running ability in middle-aged field players of Amputee soccer. The participants were eight field players registered with the Japan Amputee Football Association (lower leg amputation; 2, thigh amputation; 5, hip disarticulation; 1). Measurements were taken twice, in 2016-2017 and 2021; data items included straight 30-meter sprint running, body height, and body weight. The subjects were middle-aged players; the mean age was 40.5 ± 2.5 years in 2016-2017 and 45.0 ± 2.3 years in 2021. Significant differences were found in the 30 m sprint time and the 10–20 m interval time between the two measurement. The time required for 30 m sprint running increased by approximately 0.30 seconds from 2016–2017 to 2021, with a rate of change of −4.9%. It is important to maintain sprint running ability so that the participants retain the ability to achieve a high maximum sprint running speed and maintain high sprint running speed for as long as possible. Moreover, the importance of maintaining an appropriate body weight was suggested. It would be important for middle-aged athletes to incorporate resistance and competition-specific training, and aerobic exercise programs tailored to their individual fitness status, to continue competing for longer. To present useful information to such athletes, it is necessary to measure and evaluate physical fitness using a longitudinal approach.
