Kanazawa Institute of Technology offers a curriculum related to the
SDGs to generate actions that contribute to young people's achievement of the SDGs
(Sustainable Development Goals). By incorporating learning using ChatGPT, one
of the generative AI systems, in SDGs Basics, a subject in the first semester of the
third year of this curriculum, we aimed to effectively promote SDG education and
ESD, which require a cross-disciplinary and global perspective. The purpose of this
study is to determine how the use of ChatGPT by university students in SDG
education and ESD can lead to effective learning. The results revealed that while
learning about ChatGPT and how to use it expanded the perception of its usefulness
for learning, only half of the students proactively used ChatGPT in group work, but
only half of the students proactively used ChatGPT in individual assignments. The
results also revealed that integrating ChatGPT into learning can have both positive
and negative effects on the quality of learning.
