The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the educational effectiveness of career guidance activities offered by three different types of high school. The first one introduced new way of guidance to let students think their future way of living, the second is carrying out traditional way urging them to study for college entrance exam, and the third does not adopt any ways of guidance activities. The findings are as follows. 1) New way of guidance, so called "Ikikata-shido", is effective to widen and deepen the career perspective of students. 2) Although the traditional way of guidance, so called "Juken-shido", has been accused for many years, it shows some positive effects as a whole. 3) The third one, which does not do any ways of guidance at all, has very limited effects on students. The framework of discussion about career guidance is to evaluate the new type of guidance compared by the traditional one. But we found the most difficult problem were found in the third, "not at all" type.

Dr Donald Super's contributions to career guidance and counselling in Japan are summarised within the framework of his career development theory from 1960 to 1990. The first part is related to the theoretical frame of reference of career guidance in the secondary school. The second is focused on developing a theoretical and practical basis for career counselling for the adult population. It is concluded that the importance of his approach has increased in the changing Japanese society.
