It is pointed out that low salivary flow supports the growth of pathogenic microorganisms in oral cavity, which increases the risk of dental caries, periodontal disease, oral candidiasis like oral thrush, and also the aspiration pneumonia. Hence in the present study, the effects of commercial artificial saliva on Candida growth, acid production and biofilm formation were examined in vitro.

It is pointed out that denture plaque, a biofilm formed on denture surface, could cause not only oral candidiasis like oral thrush or denture-induced stomatitis, but also the aspiration pneumoniae, or unexpected GI tract infections. Chemical cleansing of denture is well-known as one of the most efficacious method to control the denture biofilms. Hence in the present study, the removal abilities of TiO2-incorporated denture cleanser, and commercially available denture cleansers against Candida biofilm were examined.

The shear bond strengths of four commercial dual-curing resin cements to bovine tooth dentin were measured when the resin cements were light-cured or self-cured. In a statistical comparison each cement, although the light-cured group showed higher bond strength than the self-cured group, there was not a significant difference between them. In a statistical comparison including all of cements, the polymerization mode influenced significantly on the bond strength (p<0.01).

Cohesion between a composite resin and a material of filling instrument, which affect manipulation of a composite resin filling material, was evaluated. Stainless steel and Teflon was used for a filling instrument material. Commercially available light-cured composite resins were used for the study. Cohesion and the time needed to separate the instrument material from the composite resin were different among composite resins.

In recent years, laser welding has become one of the essential techniques to repair metallic dentures in prosthetic dentistry. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the porosity in laser-welded specimens non-destructively inspection using Micro-CT. The soldering procedure was conducted in rectangular cast metals. The porosity in the welded area was evaluated using a Micro-CT and the tensile strength of the welded specimens was measured. Then the relationship between the porosity and the tensile strength was investigated. As for the laser welding between similar metal performed by a clinic every day, there were little welding defects, and that welding strength was enough was shown by this study.

Carbon nanotubes have been shown to affect cell behaviour. But how and why the carbon nanotubes affect potential differentiation of the attached cells have not been largely known. In this study, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and graphite (GP) were pressed as compacts. Higher ability of carbon nanotubes to adsorb proteins, comparing with graphite, was shown. Myoblastic mouse cells (C2C12) were cultured and the cell responses to the two kinds of compacts were compared in vitro. Meanwhile, we used cell culture on the culture plate as a control. During the conventional culture, significantly better cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation of cells on the MWNTs were found. To confirm the hypothesis that the larger amount of protein adsorbed on the carbon nanotubes was crucial for this, we made the compacts adsorb more proteins in culture medium with 50% fetal bovine serum (FBS) before cell culture. With the adsorption of the proteins in advance, the increments of the total-protein/ DNA and ALP/DNA for the MWNTs was respectively as about 11 times and 18 times as the increments of those for GP and the control at both day 4 and day 7. Therefore, the carbon nanotubes might induce cellular functions by adsorbing more proteins, which indicated that the carbon nanotubes might be a candidate for scaffold material for tissue engineering.

We cultured macrophage (PMA-differentiated THP 1 cells) in medium containing sub-micron titanium particles for 1 day, extracted total RNA, and evaluated the gene expressions related to inflammation and allergy by DNA allergy chip. We found 12 up-regulated genes that were classified into categories of chemokines, adhesive molecules, signal transduction and inflammatory cytokines.
