We describe the life-work of Father of Japanese Chemistry “Udagawa Yoan”. Udagawa Yoan was influenced by his adoptive father Genshin’s philosophy and by doctor and botanist Ito Keisuke’s publication Nijyushi Kokai (Explanation of Twenty-four classes). In 1834, he published three volumes of “Shokugaku Keigen (Principles of Botany)”. They show history of the translation of basic botanical terminology and for natural philosophy and experimental plant physiology. His “Shokubutsu Shasei Zufu” demonstrates a talent as botanical artist. Moreover, on his interest in pharmacy and botany, he found some relations to chemistry. Continuously, he published his first chemistry textbook “Seimi Kaiso” based on a Dutch translation of William Henry’s chemical book. “Seimi” comes from pronunciation of “Chemie” in Dutch and “Kaiso” means “Opening of Chemistry”. He had to develop new terminology to describe chemical substances and processes, expanding the Japanese vocabulary of chemistry. His first interest in chemistry was its application to the practical arts with glassmaking. “Seimi Kaiso” for volume 3 describes the beginner’s manual on the chemistry of “biidoro”.

Chinese chives are vegetable containing methiin and alliin, which are known to be good for human health. It is reported that the amount of methiin and alliin change depending on cooking and preservation methods, however, there have been no reporting the details. In this study, we quantitatively analyzed the amount of methiin and alliin by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method using a UV detector according to the processing conditions and preservation method in Chinese chives. Chinese chive sample were divided into three kinds by parts the tip of leaves, the stems, and the bottoms, and compared under the conditions of their use: fresh ones, cooked, frozen and preserved. In addition, a microwave oven was used for heating. As a result, there was a change in the amount of methiin and alliin in frozen preserved Chinese chives. In particular, alliin has increased 4.0 ~ 9.6 times compared to the one in all parts of fresh Chinese chives. Currently, we are examining why methiin and alliin has increased in the frozen stored condition.

Antifungal activity of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids was examined using one of potato scab pathogens, S. scabiei. Experiments carried out by using commercially available saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, i.e., myristic acid (14 : 0), palmitic acid (16 : 0), palmitoleic acid (16 : 1), stearic acid (18 : 0), oleic acid (18 : 1), linoleic acid (18 : 2), arachidic acid (20 : 0), eicosapentaenoic acid (20 : 5), and these are included in a Fukurofunori (Gloiopeltis furcata). As a result, 20 : 5 and 16 : 1 showed the strong activity against S. scabiei, i.e., the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value showed about 10 ppm and 40 ppm. But then, 14 : 0, 16 : 0, 18 : 1 , 18 : 2, 20 : 0 was not confirmed the growth inhibition to them. From the above results, MIC values of Fukurofunori extract is expected to became 160 ppm.

As the world becomes increasingly globalized, the situations in which people need to use English in communication will increase. Thus, concerns over TOEIC scores have risen. According to TOEIC test scores published by IIBC: The Institute for International Business Communication, there are small differences of TOEIC test scores at National Institute of Technology students among different grades. However few lectures have been held for all grades at the National Institute of Technology. Therefore, TOEIC special lectures have been conducted for all grades as a preliminary practice. This paper reports on the TOEIC special lectures for voluntary participants of all grades in the National Institute of Technology, Hakodate College. As a result of these lectures, it was found that participation rates decreased as the courses progressed, however end-of-course questionnaires indicated that the remaining participants were satisfied with the lectures. Following this outcome, further lectures of TOEIC should be conducted.

At the tomb of Aonae(青苗) site which is located in Okushiri(奥尻) island of Hokkaido, the Iron sword was found together with the accessory made of Jadeite, quartz and glass. In this time, we have carried out observation of the internal structure by X-ray Image Analysis apparatus in National Institute of Technology, Hakodate College. In this paper, we report on the results and considerations about the type and age of this iron sword.

This study examines bead-making technique and chemical composition of glass beads excavated from Aonae Site in Okushiri Island, Hokkaido. All of them are secondary processed beads by winding method, containing one 'eye bead' decorated with yellow and yellowish green pieces of glass. The results of chemical analysis by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) revealed that they had made of plant-ash type of soda glass colored by cobalt, and they can be classed in two groups which are different from each other in the distribution period.

Glass beads, possibly belonging to Ainu Culture, were analyzed by XRF technique to understand the origin of these glass. The samples were excavated from Hokkaido belonging to the periods from the mid 14th to the 19th century AD. The analytical results showed that the beads can be classified into two types, lead-potash silicate glass and potash lime silica glass, based on the major components. The proportion of the potash lime silica glass in total glass analyzed is significantly higher than that usually found in beads excavated in Honshu area indicating an apparent difference in the source of the glass. A compositional similarity was observed in green potash lead silica glass between present samples and Ichijyodani Asakura Clan Ruins(15,16th century AD). Potash lime silica glass beads were classified into two groups based on trace heavy elements compositions, indicating the presence of two origins.

We conducted ground penetrating radar survey on the Chashi Sites of Shibecharigawa basin of Shinhidaka in Hokkaido, with the purpose of investigating the internal structure of the Chashi. The surveyed sites were Shibechari-Chashi and Hoinashiri-Chashi. Shibechari-Chashi was thought to be the fort of Shakushain, leader of Hidaka Ainu. There was the anomaly likely to be a ditch around Chashi. In the case that it was a buried ditch, Shibechari-Chashi would come to have the largest area in Hokkaido. In Hoinashiri-Chashi, the reflection related to the chashi was gained at the main/center part of the site. Also, the anomaly detected on the west side was thought to be the reaction of the buried ditch. These results showed the Chashi was surrounded with the ditch and strengthened its protection.

Even teachers is not a homeroom teacher, it is necessary to make the students advising in various situations in school. The low-grade students, accustomed to school, must have an awareness that must be studied. The upper grades students, must have a consciousness that will decide the course. In this paper, we examine the faculty of the way for the students advising.

In the analysis, to study a function, we often representing the function as a series like a Taylor series and Fourier series. Fourier series can be regarded as a representation by components on some sort of orthonormal system in function space. In this paper, we introduce the function space with the metric that is suitable for the Taylor series.

Development of tidal and sea currents power generation in Tsugaru strait have been conducted through 2-dimentional flume. To generate power effectively in slow current range, the device was designed as the water turbine combined with the contraction diffuser. Flow rate conditions were determined from observed velocity in Tsugaru strait scaled down by the Froude's law. Flow velocity at the upstream side and contracted model part were measured simultaneously. As a result, the velocity amplification effects due to contraction diffuser increased as main velocity becomes lower, however, in case of higher range velocity, these effects are decreased.

“Shoto Shiso” is the collection of Chinese-style poems by KAKIZAKI Tomoshige (pen name of Shoto, hereafter Shoto), who married Sono, the granddaughter of KAKIZAKI Hakyo (1764-1826) , famous artist and retainer to Matsumae clan, and set up a new Kakizaki family. 303 Shoto’s poems have been recorded from the 6th year of Tenpo (1835 ) to the 2nd year of Keio (1866). Until now, not all of the works have been read through and put into print. In this paper, we will attempt to transcribe, explain the vocabulary and translate the “Shoto Shiso” into modern language , yet unknown throughout the world.
