    This paper describes distribution voltage estimation and a control method using measured data from sectionalizing switches with sensors which are called IT switch. The voltage estimation is based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and all distribution line voltages are estimated by minimizing the weighted sum of voltage and current error at IT switch. The voltage control maintains all the estimated node voltages within the proper range by changing tap of a LRT in a distribution substation. In order to check the validity of the proposed method, numerical and experimental simulations are carried out on a distribution system model.

    This paper studies new techniques for critical trajectory method, a recent new method proposed by the authors for obtaining critical clearing time (CCT) for transient stability analysis. A specific feature of the proposed method lies in its ability to provide exact CCT without approximations since no such methods have existed so far. The method is based on the computation of the critical trajectory, which is defined as the trajectory that starts from a point on a fault-on trajectory at CCT and reaches an end point. There are a few possible methods for the treatment of the end point conditions, computational performances of the methods are investigated in terms of accuracy of CCT and computational efficiency. It is shown that the proposed methods successfully provide the exact CCT that agrees with the conventional numerical simulation method.

    The high penetration of variable renewable generation such as Photovoltaic (PV) systems will cause the issue of supply-demand imbalance in a whole power system. The activation of the residential power usage, storage and generation by sophisticated scheduling and control using the Home Energy Management System (HEMS) will be needed to balance power supply and demand in the near future. In order to evaluate the applicability of the HEMS as a distributed controller for local and system-wide supply-demand balances, we developed an optimum operation scheduling model of domestic electric appliances using the mixed integer linear programming. Applying this model to several houses with dynamic electricity prices reflecting the power balance of the total power system, it was found that the adequate changes in electricity prices bring about the shift of residential power usages to control the amount of the reverse power flow due to excess PV generation.

    This paper shows the simulation of SLF interrupting performances for CO2 gas circuit breakers. In the SLF interruption tests using 72kV-CO2 gas model circuit breakers, very large post arc currents were measured. This point is obviously difference between CO2 circuit breaker and SF6 one.
    To simulate the SLF interrupting performances for the SF6 gas circuit breakers, serially connected 3 arc models were developed. In the arc model, Cassie arc model and two Mayr arc models were serially connected. It was tried to use the arc model to simulate the SLF interrupting performances for CO2 circuit breaker.
    As a result, it was good agreement with the measurements and simulations. The large post arc currents could be simulated by the arc model. It was shown that the SLF interrupting performance of the CO2 circuit breaker was dependent on the Mayr model simulated around voltage extinction peak. On the other hand, the performance of the SF6 gas circuit breaker was dependent on the Mayr model simulated around current zero. From the result, it proved that most severe SLF condition for the CO2 gas circuit breaker was L75 or L80.

    In Hokuriku area, there are many lightning strokes through the year. Lightning strokes frequently cause power failures and instantaneous voltage drops on power systems, therefore various countermeasures against lightning faults on transmission lines have been taken. Recently, line surge arresters are installed as an effective countermeasure against multiple-phase faults that cause route interruption of transmission lines. The arresters are also one of the effective methods to reduce the frequency of instantaneous voltage drops. Hence it is thought that the rate of arrester installation will rise remarkably in the future. In order to take more effective countermeasures, it is indispensable to estimate lightning fault rate of transmission lines accurately in advance. In this paper, a method to estimate relative lightning fault rate of transmission lines depending on line design and lightning activity is proposed. Then lightning fault rate of 66/77kV and 275kV transmission lines with arresters is estimated by the proposed method and their accuracy is evaluated. Furthermore, the effectiveness of arresters for the improvement of reliability of transmission lines is demonstrated.

    This paper studies physical phenomena, performance and optimal operating point of an AC MHD generator under the slip value by using a numerical simulation. The double-side exciting winding of the generator is considered. Its structure consists of a channel, an insulator and stators. Channel type is a flat rectangular and the liquid flows along the channel as a conductor. Channel wall acted as an insulator separates metal fluid and stator coils. The top and bottom stator winding of the generator is connected to polyphase system. Under this condition, it can produce a magnetic field by means of time harmonic function in the same direction of the metal fluid. An interaction between traveling wave and metal fluid is explained by finite element method under Maxwell's equation and Ohm law. The distribution of magnetic vector potential and magnetic flux density throughout channel is evidently shown in xy-plane. Power flow in AC MHD generator is evaluated by slip value. The optimal operating point of an AC MHD generator performance is reported by active power 0.99kW, reactive power 50kVAR, mechanical power 1.58kW, power dissipation 0.59kW and electrical efficiency 62.5%.

    This paper presents a wavelet-based method for transient disturbance analysis in oscillographic records of the transmission power systems. The proposed method can recognize faults and other disturbances with transients, such as voltage sags and switching transients in power systems. Developing faults and multiple transient disturbances in a single oscillographic record, such as a fault followed by an automatic line reclosing are also detected. The proposed method is based on the analysis of the wavelet coefficient energies of the phase voltages and currents achieved by sliding data windows with length equivalent to one cycle of the fundamental power frequency. These energy waveforms are normalized and records from a nonspecific line in a generic network with different sampling rates and rated voltages can be evaluated without distinction. The performance of the method was evaluated for both actual records from a Brazilian Power System and records simulated on Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and good results were obtained.
