This paper will give a semantic account of the following contrast: purpose clauses introduced by ‘so that’—containing modals such as will/would, can/could and may/might—have illocutionary force as intention, whereas result clauses followed by ‘so that’ imply the factual rather than putative idea. The claim will be made that it is a fallacy to assume that there is some difference between the two semantically as well as syntactically.
This discussion has two theoretical implications. One is that these clauses overlap in meaning; both express result—at a result. The other is that the choice of auxiliary modals depends upon a characteristic and behaviour in itself.

Cover letters for sales proposals often influence purchasers' decision making. To examine the effectiveness of cover letters, the author classified 34 cover letters submitted by corporations in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and seven other countries into: (1) transmittal type, (2) commercial type, (3) summary type, (4) prediction type, (5) capabilities type, and (6) mixed type. The result of analyzing these cover letters indicates that transmittal-type letters, which are usually as short as a few lines, are often used for standardized equipment and parts, while summary-type, prediction-type, capabilities-type and, in particular, mixed-type letters are preferred for proposals of customized equipment, such as rotating machines.

The aim of this paper is to show some standard forms and contents of the resume. In the U. S. the resume is considered to be a very important tool with which to get a job. Therefore, various types of resumes are prepared according to a person's experience, education, skills and so on.
However, there seem to be certain basic formats to be followed in writing a resume. In this paper, I will try to show what the standard resume looks like. The discussion is based on statistical analyses of 16 resumes taken from eight American textbooks on business communication.
