Taguchi method is widely used in practice. Taguchi method consists of the collection of procedures which Dr. Gen-ichi Taguchi had been developing for years. Particularly, MT (Mahalanobis Taguchi) system has come into wide use. The prototype of MT system is called MT procedure, which discriminates extraordinary samples from normal ones by using Mahalanobis distance. This type of procedure is long-established in the fields of statistical science. However, Dr. Taguchi had been developing a lot of simple procedures which were incorporated with innovative ideas.
In this paper we deal with MT procedure, MTA procedure, RT procedure and T procedure which are major in MT system, and point out their theoretical properties. Furthermore, we propose several improved procedures and discuss their efficiencies. This paper consists of our related papers which were published.

Use of the cumulative and doubly cumulative sum statistics are discussed as a unifying approach to the shape and change-point hypotheses. The shape hypotheses are useful for a dose response analysis where it is usually difficult to assume a rigid parametric model. They are closely related to the change-point hypotheses which are useful for detecting a change of a time series. The proposed statistics are the maximal contrast type and the cumulative chisquared type. As compared with the well known restricted maximum likelihood approach called the isotonic regression the proposed method is computationally simple and easy to extend to various problems including the non-normal distributions and the two-way data. In particular there are several variations of the two-way data with or without natural ordering in the row and/or columns. Several interesting procedures are introduced according to those variations. The doubly cumulative sum statistics are newly introduced for the analysis under the convexity assumption and an elegant calculation of probability is developed by the second order Markov property of the basic variables. Finally an application to the three-way data is mentioned.

After the illness for five years, Dr. Genichi Taguchi died on June 2, 2012. He had developed a number of techniques by 2007, and they can be classified into two areas. One area is known as Design of Experiment (DOE) and another area is known as Taguchi's Methods (TM). In this paper, the author describes the history of his activities and shows how those techniques have been utilized, how have been to contribute to the improvement of product quality and improvement of the efficiency of new product development activities in Japan and other countries.

In this article, some factors, which might be affected to the establishment of the Taguchi method, are studied by following footsteps of Dr. Taguchi. Three factors are raised and studied; the industrial education in his schooldays, the CCS industrial management at occupied Japan, and the exploratory data analysis (EDA) and the notion of abduction which would be met during his stay in the US. As a result, following findings are obtained. (1) The possibility that he had acquired basic knowledge of the scientific management and the cost accounting by the industrial education is quite high. (2) It seems that contents of the CCS industrial management are brought to Dr. Taguchi by Mr. Kayano, his supervisor at the Electrical Communication Laboratories. Some concepts which were taught there might be seeds of distinctive characters of the Taguchi method. (3) The Taguchi method can be considered as a method based on pragmatism. In particular, it has characteristics of an inference by abduction and the instrumentalism. In such understanding, the SN ratio can be interpreted as the scale of usefulness.
