It seems clear that variation of the mineral composition of sedimentary rocks originates from various geological, geochemical and geophisical factors. It is considered that source materials of a specified geological age which were derived from volcanic and other detritus will be deposited in a sedimentary basin of marine or continental environmental conditions, and may gradually have their mineral components changed by diagenesis. From a sedimentological point of view, it is considered that factors such as ocean currents and submarine configuration will be considered. Especially, source materials, depositional environmental conditions and diagenesis are important factors to cause variation of the mineral composition of sedimentary rocks. The writer will discuss the relations between the geological factor and the mineral composition of sedimentary rocks in Japan.
