Statistical analysis of 140 of peripheral facial palsy patients treated in the Department of Otolaryngology of Dokkyo University Hospital between August 1986 and July 1993 was performed.
Of these,55 cases (39.6%) were diagnosed as Bell's palsy,36 (25.9%) as Ramsay-Hunt's syndrome,24 (17.3%) as surgical trauma,11 (7.9%) as otogenic palsy,10 (7.2%) as traumatic palsy and 4 (2.8%) as of other origin. There were 27 males and 29 females with Bell's palsy, and 18 males and 18 females with Ramsay-Hunt's syndrome. There were 26cases of Bell's palsy on the right side,29 cases on the left side,1 case was bilateral. There were 22 cases of Ramsay-Hunt's syndrome on the right side, and 14 cases on the left side. The average duration for Bell's palsy was 35.6 years, and Ramsay-Hunt's syndrome 46.2 years. There were no relationship between the number of cases and seasons in the patient with Bell's palsy and Ramsay-Hunt's syndrome.
According to the score of facial palsy determined at the first medical examination, patients were classified into Group (0-9), Group (10-19), Group (20-29) and Group (30-39).
The cure rate for Ramsay-Hunt's syndrome was poor in Group (0-9) (35.7%).
The patients with lower facial palsy scores tended to eventually became cure of disease.
The cure rate of the patients that right-left difference was over 3.5 mA in nerve excitability test (NET) was poor (22.2%). Patients with hypertention or diabetes mellitus complicating Ramsay-Hunt's syndrome (22.2%) outnumbered such patients with Bell's palsy (5.4%).
