The effects of intake of apple and corn fiber supplemented with bifidobacteria and fructooligosaccharides preparation (A & C) on the fecal flora and fecal properties were studied in seven patients with dementia senilis. The total bacterial counts in the patients were lower than those in normal aged-persons described previously, but the numbers of
Clostridium perfringens and streptococci were at a high level, and pH was shown to be slightly alkaline. The intake of A & C resulted in significant decrease in the numbers of clostridia, staphylococci and bacilli, and slight decrease of pH value.
