The Laue figures obtained by passing a beam of heterogeneous X-rays through a thin sheet of metal reveal the atomic structure inside the metal, thus enabling us to explore the region where the usual microscopic study is incompetent. With this view the writer outlines in the present note his study on the application of X-rays in metallographical research.
The grain size of a metal greatly affects the Laue figures. This effect may be illustrated by the X-ray photographs of several batches of NaCl crystals of definite size; comparing these with that of a metal the grain size of the metal can roughly be estimated in certain circumstances. As an application of the present method, the X-ray photographs of iron which was annealed after being subjected to tension were taken and therefrom the nature of plastic deformation and the mechanism of recrystallisation by subsequent annealing are atomistically explained. It is shown that the X-ray photographs of rolled metals such as copper and iron are very serviceable for such a study and give us an inference that the atoms of metal tend, in the process of rolling, to arrange themselves in a nearly regular, but slightly strained, state peculiar to each metal.
